Stewardship 2016 eBook and On Demand Includes Lynn L. Bergeson’s Presentation On Emerging Nanotechnology

The ACTA Group

The Product Stewardship Society recently released Stewardship 2016, an eBook looking back on the highlights of Stewardship 2016. Lynn L. Bergeson, President of The Acta Group (Acta®), was quoted discussing the U.S. regulatory framework for nanotechnology as well as potential legal and stewardship issues that nanochemicals face.

Lynn Bergeson, managing partner at Bergeson & Campbell, started working with nanotechnology a decade ago, when it was unclear how the U.S. regulatory framework would approach them. There was tremendous interest in leveraging R&D and finding appropriate standards that incentivized research. The goal was to use existing frameworks without having to create new laws. The good news is that concerns about potential hazardous elements have subsided, she said. Existing governing frameworks have aptly managed the risk while optimizing the technology. “We have stewarded this technology in a way that should all make us proud,” she said. That said, the use of nanochemicals and materials does invite potential legal and stewardship issues, but there is a robust body of work readily available. Organizations have found ways to identify and manage hazards that nanomaterials might pose. How governance systems will address concerns as issues evolve is a question. The good news, said Bergeson, is that the governance systems globally are elastic enough to adapt.

The Product Stewardship Society has also created “Stewardship 2016 On Demand”, which is a collection of recorded Stewardship sessions. Lynn L. Bergeson’s 2016 presentation “Stewardship On Demand_Nanomaterials… No Small Product Stewardship Matter,” is available for purchase. This session covers recent advances in nanotechnology and new end use applications for innovative industrial materials and consumer products created by the production of engineered nanomaterials. During this presentation Ms. Bergeson states how to take advantage of these advances while also complying with regulations and protecting customers.
