While the United Nations’ (UN) Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) model provides a backbone for hazard communications, it is only a tool for other nations to utilize, adopt, and amend as appropriate for their country-specific needs. There are substantial differences among the approaches taken by Canada, Mexico, and the United States in GHS implementation, and professionals responsible for compliant Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and labels in these countries should pay close attention to the variations, especially with the fast approaching June 1, 2015, deadline for mixtures.
This webinar hosted by Bloomberg BNA will provide background information on the major building blocks of UN GHS, and examine the specific similarities and differences among:
- The Hazardous Products Act (HPA) proposed by the government of Canada in August 2014;
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) adopted by the U.S. in May 2012; and
- The voluntary NMX-R-019-SCFI-2011 Harmonized System of Classification and Hazard Communication of Chemicals Globally Harmonized System published by Mexico’s Ministry of Economy in June 2011.
The webinar presenter is Karin F. Baron, MSPH, Regulatory Consultant with Bergeson & Campbell, P.C. (B&C®) and The Acta Group (Acta®). Ms. Baron has more than 15 years experience developing, implementing, and managing complex chemical regulatory compliance matters for some of the largest industrial and specialty chemical companies in the world. Her primary areas of practice include hazard and risk assessment and communication, industrial hygiene and environmental health and safety (EHS) programs, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations pertaining to food contact materials, and GHS, including compliant SDSs.
