Environmental Regulation 2018: Hot Topics, Regulatory Developments, and Practical Guidance for Corporate Compliance, hosted by the Practicing Law Institute (PLI), provided a comprehensive overview of recent developments in environmental regulation – and de-regulation – affecting compliance obligations for a range of businesses and organizations.  Among other topics, this program covered the impact of recent court decisions, new regulations, and enforcement initiatives on regulated entities, with an emphasis on providing practical suggestions for management of environmental risks and compliance obligations. Lynn L. Lynn L. Bergeson will speak on Monday, March 23, 2015 as part of the Presidential Symposium on Nanotechnology, “Nanotechnology: Delivering on the Promise – Opportunities and Challenges for Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE).” Ms. Bergeson’s presentation, “The Regulatory Void,” will survey the governance approaches that are emerging, with particular emphasis on the need for regulatory measures in targeted areas to ensure the integrity of core governance principles and provide some measure of commercial predictability. 3rd Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization (SNO) Conference, November 2 - 4, 2014, Boston, Massachusetts

The objective of this conference was to bring together scientific experts from academia, industry, and government agencies from around the world to present and discuss current research findings on the subject of nanotechnology and sustainability. The conference program addressed the critical aspects of sustainable nanotechnology such as life cycle assessment, green synthesis, green energy, industrial partnerships, environmental and biological fate, and the overall sustainability of engineered nanomaterials. WEBINAR - Regulation of Nanotechnology: Practical Information for Industry, Researchers and Other Stakeholders, October 16, 2014, 1:00PM - 2:30PM EDT

This webinar was presented by the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA). The commercialization of nanomaterials is rapidly growing. Existing laws are being used to manage potential risks and to promote nanomaterials’ benefits. Entities engaged with nanomaterials must be diligent and ensure commercial applications of nanomaterials pose no adverse effects. A proactive, informed approach can prevent adverse results and unintended consequences. Jim Alwood and Kenneth Moss, EPA, discussed how the U.S. regulatory framework is facilitating nanomaterial commercialization and discussed the process for notifications of nanomaterials under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Lynn L. Bergeson, Bergeson & Campbell, P.C., addressed the beneficial applications of nanomaterials, and strategies stakeholders can pursue to ensure their nano activities are undertaken lawfully.

International Society of Exposure Science 24th Annual Meeting, October 12-16, 2014, Cincinnati, Ohio

The theme for the 24th Annual Meeting was “Exposure Science Integration to Protect Ecological Systems, Human Well-Being, and Occupational Health.” The program’s intent was to foster the integration of exposure science as applied to community, occupational, and ecological health as recommended by the National Resource Council’s report Exposure Science in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy. Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) Nano Workshop, September 15 - 16, 2014, Washington, D.C.

A workshop to explore how a multiple models approach can advance risk analysis of nanoscale materials. A mix of invited presentations, panels, and deliberative breakout sessions focused on unique aspects of the risks of nanoscale materials and risk analysis for these materials. WEBINAR:  Nanotechnology Update and Outlook to 2015, August 21, 2014, 11:00 EDT

Compliance & Risks presented a complimentary webinar Thursday August 21, 2014 that informed and educated participants about the latest developments in the regulation of nanotechnology and nanomaterials. There was no charge for the webinar, though registration was required.

Lynn L. Bergeson shared insight and analysis regarding existing and emerging governance tools in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and explored nanotechnology governance approaches that are due to become operational in 2015 and beyond. Topics included governance methods relating to nanotechnology chemical applications in specific products, such as food contact materials, cosmetics, and medical devices, and existing and emerging governance tools in the areas such as environmental (media specific -- air, water, and waste); product safety (consumer product and product liability); product-specific (industrial, agricultural, and biocide); and workplace protection (workers, ambient air, and health and safety standards).
