ECHA Calls for Evidence on Certain Chromium (VI) Substances

Lynn L. Bergeson Carla N. Hutton

According to an item in the December 13, 2023, issue of the ECHA Weekly, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is looking for information for a potential restriction of certain chromium (VI) substances under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals regulation (REACH). ECHA has opened a call for evidence targeting companies using chromium (VI) substances. ECHA seeks information on:

  • The costs and effectiveness of risk management measures to limit exposure to and emissions of chromium (VI); and
  • Additional information relevant for the preparation of the Annex XV proposal for a restriction of certain chromium (VI) compounds.

The call for evidence is intended for interested parties, such as private companies (manufacturers, suppliers, recyclers, downstream users, distributors, and importers), sector associations, scientific organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and other stakeholders, as well as Member State Authorities holding relevant information. ECHA encourages both European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) and non-EU stakeholders to participate. ECHA notes that “[i]nformation is submitted confidentially and will be treated as such by ECHA.” ECHA will use the information to prepare an Annex XV restriction proposal, as requested by the European Commission (EC). Responses are due February 13, 2024.
